Bitter pill to swallow ‘four’ Cliffe after another defeat
CLIFFE FC slumped to their fifth league defeat of the season after a 4-1 loss at the hands of Bishopthorpe United.
Cliffe, in division two of the York Minster Engineering Football League, haven’t played since the beginning of January and looked off the pace in the first half, going 1-0 down early on when Bishopthorpe’s captain put them ahead with a composed finish.
Adam Durnin saw two chances go begging before the break and Lee Carter had a pair of shouts for a penalty – one for a possible handball and the other a challenge from behind.
But Cliffe couldn’t make the breakthrough and trailed 1-0 at half time.
The second half began in a similar fashion to the first, as two early goals from close range put the home side into an unassailable 3-0 lead.
Only then did Cliffe begin to spark into life, and a Nathan Parker volley from 25 yards out gave them the faintest glimmer of hope.
But Bishopthorpe compounded Cliffe’s misery with the fourth goal, as the United captain completed his hat-trick.
Cliffe need to start picking up maximum points in the coming fixtures as the Division Two relegation trap-door begins to loom.
Cliffe welcome the visit of the in-form Strensall next Saturday.
