Betting: Sheffield Wednesday backed to keep it clean
Sheffield Wednesday couldn’t pick up all three points at Huddersfield at the weekend but encouragingly for Dave Jones’ troops they managed to keep a clean sheet, meaning the Owls have now gone four matches without conceding a goal.
Paddy Power rate Wednesday at 12/5 to take that tally to five consecutive shutouts as they welcome Burnley to Hillsborough, where Jones’ charges will kick off as 11/8 favourites with BetVictor and bet365 price the Clarets at 11/5 to bring the Owls’ decent run to an end.
Another stalemate meanwhile, is available at 12/5 courtesy of Skybet, who quote odds of 10/1 for another goalless encounter and it’s 4/1 (Stan James) to be all square at the end of each half.
Tentative home supporters can back their side at 4/6 in Stan James’ ‘Draw No Bet’ market but given Wednesday’s sequence of clean sheets and positive results, plenty of the Owls faithful will be expecting their team to make it a happy start to the new year.
For them, BetVictor post 3/1 against a victory for the hosts by a one-goal margin and with the current resilience of Jones’ defence in mind, some punters might consider Ladbrokes’ 8/1 for the Owls to register a 1-0 triumph against a patchy Burnley side whose form on the road leaves plenty of room for improvement.
Inevitably, as it’s a derby clash, Doncaster and Sheffield United will be well backed at 12/5 with Skybet to share the spoils as they prepare to lock horns at the Keepmoat Stadium. The duo were inseparable at Bramall Lane and bet365 make this one 9/1 to replicate it by ending 0-0.
It’s the Blades that bookies lean towards however, despite the shock defeat to Hartlepool, Ladbrokes rating them at 8/5 to make the short journey back across South Yorkshire three points better off and Stan James offering 7/4 about Rovers sending them home empty-handed.
A close encounter appears likely and BetVictor quote 16/5 for United to shade it by one. More accurately a 2-1 triumph for Danny Wilson’s charges is a 17/2 shot via William Hill and bet365 make the hosts 10/1 to prevail by an identical scoreline. Nick Blackman is the man bookies fear the most in the first scorer market, Paddy Power pricing him at 11/2 to put the Blades 1-0 up.
Back in the Championship, Barnsley are 9/4 (BetVictor) to triumph in their crucial clash against fellow strugglers Peterborough, at London Road, where the Tykes are 12/5 with William Hill to land a point while in League Two, Rotherham are 6/4 via Stan James to start 2013 as they mean to go on by overcoming Rochdale and BetVictor mark 31/20 against a Chesterfield success at Accrington.
