SHEFFIELD has hit the bullseye in securing a leg of a world famous darts tournament.

The McCoy’s Premier League Darts event will feature 10 top flight players, including Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, who won his 16th World Championship title on Tuesday.

Dutchman Michael van Gerwen, who was beaten by Taylor in the Ladbrokes World Darts Championship, will make his debut in the tournament along with Wes Newton and Robert Thornton.

The 10 players will compete in arenas across the UK and Ireland over 15 nights, stopping off at the Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Thursday, April 11.

James Wade, who won the event in 2009 and Gary Anderson, who won in 2011, will compete along with Adrian Lewis, Simon Whitlock, Raymond van Barneveld and Andy Hamilton.

By the time the tournament reaches Sheffield the top eight will be left.

Barry Hearn, chairman of the Professional Darts Corporation, said: “This new format for the McCoy’s Premier League Darts is going to take the tournament to a whole new level.

“Fans across the UK and Ireland will experience five spectacular matches on each night, and all 10 players have earned their spots with their achievements over the last 12 months.

“This new format will mean incredible competition both to avoid relegation and then for Play-Off places before the ninth McCoy’s Premier League champion is crowned at The O2 in May.”
