As sporting stars strike it rich, professionals are no longer tradesmen

There was a day, not so long ago, when the ethos of sport was all about being an amateur – that is, not getting paid for winning your race, or whatever it was that you were especially good at. Well, that’s how I saw it as I was growing up in South Africa in the fifties and sixties.

Coaching camp to raise further hope

Following the success of a similar course in the spring, Selby Cricket Club will be holding another coaching camp for juniors during the coming half-term holiday.

Gibson bowls lots of maidens over as Cawood go top

With some outstanding individual efforts – most notably that of opening bowler Gibson who finished with the remarkable figures of 2 for 3 off 12 overs including nine maidens – Cawood went joint top of the York Senior League’s Division 6 with a 91-run victory over Rowntrees.

Rhythm lacking as swing beats Thorpe batsmen

Having already lost more league games than they did in the whole of last season, promoted Thorpe Willoughby know they will need to up their performance level in the coming weeks if they are to compete effectively in Division 2 of the York Vale League.

Neighbours match scores on wet night

As the wet weather reduced the fixture list by half on the opening day of the Snaith & District League, Burn came out top-scorers in Division 1 by setting a target of 126-9 against Pollington thanks chiefly to Ray Adamson (58) who scored the only half-century of the evening and is pictured left on a less happy occasion.

Burn light up the sky with sparkling start

Despite the distractions of a stag do, Burn got their cricket season off to a sparkling start with a 25-run victory over Wheldrake in a York Vale League Division 1 derby at their splendid ground just outside the village.

Helped by the return to the fold of Mark Spetch and Will Brown, Carlton Towers got their York Senior League Division 3 campaign off to a sizzling start in near-arctic conditions.

Match called off in damp start to new Salmon season

Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams cut the ribbon as he officially opened the new changing rooms at Burton Salmon Cricket Club, whose pavilion was burnt down at the end of last season.
