STEELERS uncorked their new signing today - playmaker Scott Champagne from Belfast Giants!

As The Star revealed earlier this week, the club effectively completed a ‘trade’ after Colin Shields left, in the opposite direction.

The signing means that Sheffield’s bid to catch League leaders Nottingham Panthers now rests on two ‘Cornishmen’.

Champagne is from Cornwall, Ontario, home town of Steelers’ most effective player, Jeff Legue.

Champagne will practice with his new team mates today before flying back to Belfast on Saturday for the critical league game against his old pals.

The 29-year-old forward has had injury problems this season and has sat out 12 of 30 games for the Irish.

He scored 5+10. At Nottingham Panthers, last season, he scored 37 points in 29 matches.

“It’s a signing we’ve been trying to make for some time,” said Steelers coach Ryan Finnerty.

“Scott is the perfect fit for what we are looking for. Someone who will compliment Jeff Legue on our big line and help our power-play. Legue was instrumental in Champagne agreeing to sign.

“They both come from the same town and have grown up together. They know each other’s game inside out.”

The 5ft 11ins skater added: “I had several options and took my time to weigh them up.

“I chose Sheffield because they are a winning franchise.

“I’m positive we can put a run together and give this league title a real shot.

“I know Jeff well and can’t wait to play alongside him.

“I’m sure we can build an excellent partnership.”
