Three wins out of four for Plant boxers on top show
DONCASTER Plant Works ABC boxers played their part in a knock-out show in Cambridgeshire at the weekend.
Veteran coach Ken Blood took four of his best boxers to March ABC’s sell-out show.
“It’s a long way to go but I knew that it would be good show and that my lads would be up against some quality opposition who wouuld bring out the best in them and that is what you want,” said Blood.
“You don’t get any better by boxing lads that you should be beating; you only improve by boxing people as good as you or better.”
Jimmy Flint (15) was the first Plant boxer in the ring on the night, crossing swords with Birmingham’s Oliver McGroany in an Under-56kg clash. “It was a first class contest; the crowd,” enthused Blood.
“My lad was a unanimous winner, and deserved to be, but he had to work hard in every round. He finished very strongly in the last minute.”
Nathan McGarry (16) also performed well on the night in his Under-53kg clash against Mark Rooney (St Ives).
“It was another top class contest between two class acts,” said Blood. “Rooney was named the unanimous winner but not everyone agreed with the decision and it could have gone either way.”
Thomas Bell (15) outpointed Billy Smith (St Ives) in another crowd-pleaser in their Under-55kg contest.
“It had everything,” said Blood. “It was close throughout but Bell stepped it up in the last round and claim a unanimous decision.
“That’s 19 wins in 24 bouts.”
Senior light-middleweight Jake Westlake didn’t hang around in his bout against Jay Bywater (Norwich City). He forced his opponent to take a standing count after catching him with a combination of blows. Westlake brought proceedings to a halt in the final round when knocking Bywater out with a superb right hand to the chin.
