Green challenge can Maxi-mise Hughes’ career

ROSSINGTON fighter Maxi Hughes faces a step up in class in his next fight and it is just the test the youngster was after.

Unbeaten Hughes, aged 22, will fight former Scottish champion Stuart Green at Magna on November 30 and will need to win to boost his reputation.

Green has already fought the likes of Lenny Daws and Martin Gethin in his 30 fights and is used to campaigning at a higher level than Hughes has. The Millennium gym trained light-welter knows full well that he would be a great name to have on his record.

“The name of the opponent has really motivated me and given me the kick up the backside to train as hard as I can ,” said Hughes.

“He has fought at a high level and beat Patrick Walsh. If you’re not on your game he’ll beat you. The fight could have been over eight but I’m working at the minute and it’s hard to get the time off to train twice a day. That’s something I’m going to have to look into.”

In the amateurs, Dave Pickersgill earned Balby Carr Boxing Academy their first ever win as a gym with a debut win over Reece Young in Leeds. The 32-year-old initially only joined the club to lose weight.

Both Doncaster representatives were eliminated from the Senior Novices in Liverpool over the weekend. Andrew Anthony from Highfields lost to Richard Howarth and Armthorpe ABC’s Reece Sykes went down to John Edwardson.
