Donny’s new title hunter generation

Heavy handed: Carl Spencer

JAMIE McDonnell isn’t the only boxer about to put Doncaster on the sporting map.

That’s the view of two rookie heavyweights who are convinced they can make an imnpression on what is generally regarded as a weak division.

Carl Spencer and Dave Allen will both feature on a Dennis Hobson bill at Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield, on March 2nd.

And Spencer, 26, from Bentley, says it is a launching pad for bigger and better things.

“We both had a pretty decent following and we want to do well. We are good mates and have a laugh but we wouldn’t dodge anybody in a fight” he said.

“Our division is what everybody is interested but is short of quality so we believe we can get noticed and win titles.

“It is great for Doncaster to have two good heavyweights at a time when Jamie is about to become a world champion.

“He is a good lad who trains hard and when he is in the ring, he just makes it look easy.

“But he got where he is by training hard. And when things are going against him he knows how to knuckle down dand come back stronger. That is a good asset to have and because Jamie is so dedicated to winning that world title I know he can do it.”

Spencer has two KOs on his novice record, while Allen, 20, has a single points’ victory to his name.
