HATFIELD bantamweight Jamie McDonnell has vowed to change his party lifestyle after edging a step closer to becoming Doncaster’s first ever world champion.

McDonnell recorded an impressive eight-round knockout victory over Darwin Zamora at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena to set up a potential stateside bout with world champion Leo Santa Cruz. The Mexican locks horns with his fellow countryman Victor Zaleta in Los Angeles next month, with McDonnell braced to meet the winner.

“I will keep myself fit over Christmas,” he told The Star. “I’ve got to this level now so I can’t be sitting in the pub with my mates drinking at weekends. I have to live the life of a world champion. That’s what I’ve got to do now.

“I have to live in the gym and have no distractions.”

The Star understands there is a possibility McDonnell may have to fight another IBF final eliminator before getting his world title shot as Zamora was a late call-up following the withdrawal of Vusi Malinga.
