Doncaster’s Carl Spencer tip to make impact

Confident: Carl Spencer with Kevin Sanders, top

ANY heavyweight who can boast he has stopped Sheffield giant Richard Towers deserves to be taken seriously.

Carl Spencer, 26, from Bentley, Doncaster, beat Towers when the pair were amateurs.

Towers has gone on to bigger and better things - as The Star reported yesterday he has been sparring with world champion Wladimir Klitschko in Europe.

Spencer, meanwhile, a similar height at 6ft 8ins, may be a few professional fights behind Towers, but is backed to make an impact on the domestic scene.

He boxes on Saturday at Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium, in a show promoted by Dennis Hobson.

Spokesman Kevin Sanders said: “Carl’s had one pro fight and one KO (Lithuanian cruiserweight Rolandas Cesna, at the same venue, September).

“He did superbly well in sparring with Matt Skelton and we have a feeling we can take him to the top.”

Nineteen-stone Spencer takes on another professional novice, Arpad Nedo, from Hungary.

Cesna is in action on the same bill too, trying his luck this time against another Doncaster fighter, debutant David Allen, who won titles as an amateur.

Allen predicts his bout could be short but wants to “enjoy it while it lasts.”

Also on the bill is Dronfield’s Lewis Taylor, trained by Clinton Woods. Taylor is progressing well, says Sanders.
