Boxing star aims to shine in front of cameras
Following his stunning performance on home soil – the first professional boxing show to be staged in Goole for 56 years – rising star Zak Collins is looking to finish his year on a high when he competes in front of television cameras in Hull on Saturday.
The 23-year-old former Read School student is so far unbeaten after his first four fights – winning every round in the process – and aims to keep it that way at the Hull Sports Arena in an evening which will be broadcast live on Channel 5 from 9pm.
The show will headline what is billed as a potentially explosive encounter between European super middleweight champion James DeGale and former IBO world champion Fulgencio Zuniga for the WBC Silver Championship. The Colombian said: “I want to fight James because it gives me the opportunity to beat an Olympic gold medallist.”
Also featuring will be middleweight sensation Chris Eubank Jr in a contest with WBC International champion Kid Galahad.
And light welterweight Zak will feature in an action-packed ‘undercard’. Though brought up in Goole, where he took up the sport as a young boy, Zak now lives in Selby and boxes for St Paul’s Academy in Hull.
He wowed his many fans at the Goole Leisure Centre just under a fortnight ago (see picture left) when he won each of six two-minute rounds against Lithuanian opponent Julius Rafael.
Coach Mike Bromby has praised his all-action style– “he’s like a little pitball” – and believes he is showing great potential.
A month ago Zak took part in a contest of a different kind after being nominated for the Sporting Hero category in the Selby Times and Goole Courier Community Pride Awards at Drax, where he finished runner-up.
All the best, Zak!
