Boxing: Doncaster Dome pro debut for Morgan

NEW boy to the professional ranks Josh Morgan is plugged in for a career in boxing.

Morgan has been around the game since his early teens and had his first fight at 14 for Doncaster Plant ABC. He then represented Retford ABC for half of his 26 bouts but now feels settled at Mexborough’s Empress Ballroom gym.

He said: “I’ve been in and around boxing for ten years but now the time feels right to further progress and the best way to do that is as a professional.

“There’s a good atmosphere at the gym and obviously world-class sparring on offer with Jamie McDonnell.

“I’m really good friends with Joe Elfidh and it’s great to fight on the same show as him. I had a decent record in the amateurs and I’m a strong lad.”

Morgan gets the best of both worlds in training. He gets to mix it with lightweights Andy Townend and Robbie Barrett, who speed around him and then bigger middleweights like Mickey Davies, who possess more power.

Also in his favour as a self-employed electrician is that he already has secured sponsorship from Rotherham firm JP Glasby.

That will allow him to have more of an emphasis to his training than lads who have to work around the clock.

“In the amateurs I was in and out of boxing but this is it now,” added Morgan.

“I’ve got to do it right and I’ve been training really hard. I think Stefy Bull has five shows planned for this year and it would be good to be 5-0 by this time next year.”

Morgan’s professional career will begin against veteran Scotsman Matt Seawright over four, three-minute rounds.

Seawright (W3 L69 D4) is stoppable as Adam Kelly, now a teacher at Balby Carr, proved back in 2010 when he knocked him out with the first punch of the fight after just 16 seconds.
