With both teams having experienced mixed fortunes following their relegation from Division 1 last season, Whitkirk condemned Carlton Towers back to the Division 2 relegation zone with an advantage draw by a margin of 59 runs.
Without the irrepressible Paul Wright's class, commitment and leadership qualities, the Carlton batting line-up was lacking that most active of ingredients.
