AFTER their poor showing against lowly Glasshoughton in the NCE Premier League, the Robins slipped up on another banana skin at second from the bottom Long Eaton, writes Tommy Arkley.
The hosts took the lead after only seven minutes with a shot from outside the box from Daniel Beldham – Adam Mitchell got a finger to it but could not prevent it hitting the net. However, he made amends after 20 minutes with a superb save from Scott
Downie.
But the Robins could not get their flowing football going against a side fighting for their Premier status and after 34 minutes the hosts doubled their lead when a great move down the right found Downie alone on the penalty spot and, before a defender could react, he had turned and shot into the net.
After that Mitchell was not really troubled much, but neither was Ross Whalin in the home goal.
The second half was a case of Long Eaton protecting their precious lead and Selby struggling to break down their dogged resistance. At times it was hard to tell which team was in the bottom two. I could make a host of excuses to explain Town's predicament, but it would take some believing so they will just have to take each game as it comes and hopefully recapture their form. It doesn't matter who you play in this league, every game is as competitive as the next. So you can't afford to switch off.
Team: Mitchell, Kamara, Hart, Connor, Dawson, Littler, Lyon, Roughley (Reid 67), Twitchen, Wash, Matthews, (Lattimore 62).
The Robins are on their travels again on Saturday when they visit Sutton Town, kick-off 3pm, and on Tuesday night with a game at Armthorpe Welfare, kick-off 7.45pm.
Directions to Sutton's ground at The Fieldings, Huthwaite Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, are as follows: Turn off at junction 28 of the M1 towards Mansfield. Then turn left at the first set of traffic lights onto Common Road towards Huthwaite. And turn right opposite the White Hart pub towards Sutton-in-Ashfield. The ground is on the right behind Clarence House Nursing Home.
Directions to Armthorpe: Follow signs to Armthorpe from junction 4 of the M18 and turn right into Church Street at the roundabout. The ground is 100 yards or so on your left. Alternatively, take the A1M and A638 or A19 into Doncaster town centre and follow signs to Armthorpe. When you get to the village, the ground (behind Markham Main WMC) will be on your right.
A quiz night is being held every Thursday in the Richard Street clubhouse, at the back of the leisure centre. The bar opens from 7.30pm till late. All are welcome or just call in for a drink. The clubhouse is available for hire for parties/functions from £50. Phone Selby 210900.
