Fancy a career change? Become a Taxi Driver

Advertorial Feature

For many, the thought of having a nine-to-five job doesn’t appeal. Stuck in an office all day, a slave to deadlines, staring at a computer screen; it does sound a bit depressing! But what if there was an alternative? What if you had more freedom, could meet new people and be your own boss? Well, there is a solution… become a taxi driver! This career path (if you can drive) ticks all the right boxes, and saves you from day after day of endless paperwork. Lovely. However, if you do fancy getting behind the wheel of your own cab, then there are a few things you need to be aware of. From checking out Swinton taxi insurance quotes to knowing if the job’s right for you, here’s a few tips to think about!

The Vehicle
First of all, it’s a good idea to consider the vehicle that you’ll be driving and what aspects you’ll need to deal with as a result. If you’d prefer to own your own taxi, then it’s certainly worthwhile trying to estimate the total cost of the car etc. beforehand. This way you’ll know what position you’re in before you start earning. Something which you can’t neglect is buying insurance for your car or van. For example, if you see yourself driving a minibus as opposed to an ordinary cab, then you’re better investing in some comprehensive minibus insurance. This way you’ll be protected against any nasty accidents, so don’t forget it!

Type of driver
Another factor you’ll have to think about is what type of driver you’d like to be. Normally there are two distinct types, private hire drivers and public hire drivers. In terms of difference, private hire drivers tend to be pre-booked by those requesting a taxi and aren’t allowed to randomly pick up customers who haven’t done so. Whereas public drivers on the other hand (or black cab/ Hackney cab drivers) are completely free to pick up customers without them needing to call in advance. It’s just a question of what you want from your job!

The Job
Before you decide to live your life on the road and dedicate yourself to a life of taxiing, it’s worthwhile taking some time to really think about what the job entails. A career as a taxi driver is brilliant in that you’re practically self-employed and you get to meet a nice variety of people. However, conversely, your greatest opportunity to earn lots of money is on public holidays and the most important dates of the year; be it Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve, you’re highly likely to be working. What’s more, you’re also probably going to pick up a few irritating customers in your time as a driver, so make sure you have the confidence to handle this. Like any job, it comes with its pros and its cons, so think wisely.
