SNAITH School staff and students were celebrating this week after they achieved some of the best scores in the region as part of new government figures just released.
Secondary school league tables show the Pontefract Road seat of learning performed consistently well in GCSE and A Level exams.
But arguably the standout achievement was for its value-added score – the level students exceed expectations between the ages of 11 and when they sit their GCSEs – which was one of the best in Yorkshire.
Headteacher Jean Pickerill said: "We're delighted with the results, which are a credit to the hard work of staff, students, governors and parents.
"I think a lot of our success comes down to the changes we've made in the curriculum, with courses now available for subjects such as BTEC sport plus health and social care. These are by no means easy courses, but as they're more coursework-based, they suit people who can work hard over a two-year period rather than cramming for a final exam. We've made significant improvements here."
Jean added: "Our latest exam results are the best we've ever had. We've gone from 72 per cent to 78 and then 81 per cent last year for A* to C passes, with those students passing five or more at this level, including English and Maths, breaking the 60 per cent barrier.
"And it doesn't stop there. We're now launching diplomas in 2010 for year ten students in business and IT, which is very exciting for the school."
