FORMER Sherburn Parish Council chairman Malcolm Dowson has dispelled the mystery and rumours surrounding his shock resignation, blaming poor health.
In a brief letter and e-mail to council clerk Margaret Gibson, the former councillor said he was resigning from his roles as chairman, councillor and from all committees due to 'personal reasons', offering no further explanation.

But following "overwhelming pressure", Mr Dowson (pictured) has now revealed complications from recent surgery, as well as a heavy workload from increasing government legislation, were to blame.

He said: "I feel I owe people an explanation. In March, I retired from my auction business to have a much-needed operation on my throat. But, unfortunately, there have been many problems with my recovery and it's still an ongoing situation, with imminent further visits to the specialist.

"Because of this, and known only to close family, I've been under great physical and mental strain, while still continuing to cope with an ever-increasing workload as chairman of the council."

Mr Dowson also claimed the increasing responsibilities parish councils were expected to shoulder, coupled with his other commitments, made it impossible to continue.

"When I accepted the role of chairman I said I'd do my best to rebuild the council and bring it to full strength," he added. "I gave it 110 per cent and feel I can justifiably take some credit for the fine parish council we now have.

"I feel my resignation will have little effect on the excellent work of the present council, which is so dedicated to working for the good of Sherburn residents with, I might add, no financial remuneration whatsoever."

Mr Dowson added his community and charitable work for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and other good causes would continue.

The vacancy is now being advertised, with council members likely to vote in a replacement during their next meeting on December 14.
