COMMUNITY stalwart Barbara Wilson has been elected as Sherburn Parish Council's new chairman.
The former vice-chairman's new role was proposed and seconded at Monday's meeting, before colleague Coun Ivan Sorby was chosen as her replacement.
The move follows last month's shock resignation of former chairman Malcolm Dowson on grounds of ill health.
Coun Wilson said: "I'm very pleased to be elected and hope to help progress all the projects already started by the council.
"Sherburn is a busy and thriving community, so I'm sure I'll be kept very busy."
Voted in as a councillor in February 2008, Coun Wilson, of Moor Lane, became vice-chairman in May of this year and is also secretary of Sherburn Community Association.
She's best known for speaking out against a 100-property Redrow Homes development residents claimed was 'burdening their community's infrastructure and destroying its character'.
