A FOND farewell was given by staff, children and parents of the Peter Pan Nursery in Sherburn on Monday when its recently-retired manager returned for a leaving party.
Brenda Thornton, 60, who stepped down from her leading post at the popular nursery in December after two decades' loyal service since joining in 1989, met for a slice of a specially-made cake and tea with those she has come to know as friends.

She said she had a tear in her eye as she once again met her former colleagues and nursery users, but added it was nice to meet up with them once again.

Brenda added: "What a wonderful occasion this was. It was organised by volunteer Jenny Moy, and my successor Melanie Godridge even made me a cake saying 'Cheers Brenda'."

The nursery was started in 1985 by Gwan Sykes as a respite care group, and moved into its current premises in the old caretaker's house at Hungate Primary School four years later.

"Working here was such a rewarding experience and it was wonderful to see everyone again. I feel privileged to have been part of the children's and their parents' lives," added Brenda.

"I still intend to keep in touch with everyone, and I hope to return later this year as a volunteer."
