VITAL repairs to a Barlby school playground are almost complete thanks to the generosity and hard work of Yorkshire businesses and a determined governor.
When Suzanne Douglas was informed the play equipment at Barlby Community Primary School was off limits to nursery and reception class pupils because of damage to the foundations, she set about appealing to businesses to help to fix it.
And her urgent pleas didn’t fall on deaf ears, with no less than 11 firms stepping in to provide all the cash, materials, tools and man power needed to get the job done before the school closed for the summer break.
Suzanne, who runs safety consultant company SQES, said: “The school is quite new, but the old foundations had come up through the play area. The children were really missing it and didn’t want it out of use for long, so I used my business contacts to send urgent appeals to other firms, and the response was better than we could have hoped for.
“I can’t believe how much we have achieved in such a short space of time, which is thanks to all the firms and individuals who helped with this project. Everyone really came together, and with a little community spirit the children can enjoy their playtime again.”
Businesses who donated were: Donaldson Associates, of York – cash; Colt Industrial Services, of Hull, top soil; Aventura, of London, cash; SQES, of Selby, cash; Anytime Skips, of Barlby, a skip; PF Lynch Environmental Services, of Mansfield, three contractors for four days; Magsons Construction, of Knottingley, cash; Londesborough Arms, of Selby, reduced accommodation for contractors; Lindum Seeded Turf, of Thorganby, 60 per cent off required turf; Fairfax Plant Hire, of Hemingbrough, free digger hire; Focus DIY, of Selby, benches for play area.
