INFLATION-beating tax rises have been pledged for the coming year by Selby's district council leader.
Coun Mark Crane vowed to keep rises below the rate of inflation when he was first elected – a promise he said he aimed to keep.
The government's target measure of inflation – the Consumer Price Index – currently stands at 2.9 per cent.
Coun Cra
ne said he would seek approval for his council tax promise at the next full council meeting on February 9.
He added: "I promised to keep council tax below the rate of inflation, and I aim to honour that. I feel the people of Selby have been through a bad time during the past two years and I feel they expect Selby District Council not to overspend.
"I made a commitment in 2003 when I was elected to keep any rises below the inflation rate, and I aim to keep that promise."
SDC takes about 15 per cent of the total council tax figure, with the rest levied by North Yorkshire County Council, North Yorkshire Fire Authority, North Yorkshire Police Authority and parish/town councils.
The county council's levy of 70 per cent of the total bill could make a big difference to tax rises. Its executive committee will meet next week, but anything it decides will have to be ratified by full council in March.
