RECORD 4,000 crowds flocked to enjoy bumper Selby Family Fun Day celebrations.
The free town council-backed bonanza included entertainment at three sites across town, featuring an open air concert on the Bowling Green that saw residents young and old dancing in the sunshine to the cream
of tribute acts and undiscovered talent.

Town mayor Coun Steve Shaw-Wright said: "It was a fantastic occasion with something for all the family.

"As ever there were more visitors than last year, the bands were superb and everyone really enjoyed themselves. It's getting bigger and better every year."

Winners of this year's Selby Battle of the Bands contest Leonard's Revenge kicked off the concert festival, followed by Dirty Secrets and Hendrix covers queen Chantel McGregor and her band.

Mates of the Beautiful South's Paul Heaton performed their best tracks, together with those of the Housemartins, as The Beautiful Sound.

York-based combo Katie & The Questions were next on stage, followed by new indie darlings Last Gang from Wakefield, much trumpeted in the NME as the next big thing.

And topping the bill was the Bryan Adams Experience – the UK's foremost tribute to the Canadian rock star, playing all the hits from Summer Of '69 to Everything I Do.

Over on the Scott Road Community Field, families were treated to a 'down on the farm' theme of events, including heavy horses, dog displays, Blackpool beach donkey rides and small creatures from Too
Hoots Nursery at Carlton.

Selby Park hosted a brass band concert featuring South Milford Brass Band, Selby Music Centre and Hatfield Band.

The fun weekend also featured Selby's Classic Motorcycle Rally on Saturday, with more than 200 vintage machines on display in the park.
Selby District Council leisure services marketing officer and organiser Neil Harrison said: "It was a superb day.

"Numbers were up on last year and there were some eye-catching motorcycles on show, including a 1920s model that certainly attracted some attention.

"It's definitely a growing event – people visited from as far a field as Redcar and Middlesbrough. We're delighted."
