PLANS for a two per-cent hike in the North Yorkshire Fire Authority's element of council tax was necessary, a leading service spokesman said this week.
The authority's director of corporate services Ian Young said a 1.3 per cent increase had been mooted, but a two per cent rise each year for the next four years was agreed to maintain budget targets.

He said this included factoring in a projected rise in wages of one per cent during the next year, based on current government targets and delivering a high level of service.

He added: "After the next general election, we will have to see what the Fire Authority budget is for the medium and long term to see if this affects future tax rises."

His view was countered by Liberal Democrat councillor and Selby prospective parliamentary candidate Tom Holvey.

He said: "In these hard times, I think it's hard to justify increasing council tax by any more than is necessary."
