AVERAGE households will have to fork out about an extra £50 for their council tax during the coming financial year.
The rise comes after district councillors rubber stamped final figures at a full council meeting on Tuesday.
Basic rates for band D properties were set at £1221.63, which pays for town/parish, district and county council, police and fire services.
People in the highest value homes will pay up to £2,640, while those in the lowest-priced band A homes could pay just £814.
Selby town councillors recommend the highest overall figure of £1,320 for band D, while residents in Birkin, Hambleton, Little Fenton, Skipwith and Temple Hirst will pay just the basic rate.
Selby councillor Steve Shaw-Wright said the authority had looked closely at the precept. "I think it is absolutely justified," he said.
"We do much more than any other parish – we provide the Christmas lights, the fun day and fireworks and give grants to local groups.
"It's also worth remembering we do not get any central government funding, unlike the district council."
Selby District Council leader Coun Mark Crane said: "I think the district council portion of the bill, which represented a rise of 2.9 per cent, was good value for money.
"This year the government capped rises at 5 per cent, which I don't think is a good idea as I believe authorities should be free to set their own rates. Having said that, our rise would have been well below that anyway.
"The Conservatives in Selby made an election promise not to raise council tax above the level of inflation and we're determined to stick to our guns and keep that promise."
