PLANS to improve a town centre pedestrian crossing but remove another have outraged Selby town councillors.
At their meeting on Monday, concerns about the controversial speed table outside Boots in Market Place were discussed, but it was revealed Selby District Council's plans to improve its safety could mean the loss of the nearby pelican crossing in front of WH Smith in Gowthorpe.

Selby Mayor Coun Steve Shaw-Wright said: "We're not happy proposals to make the speed table outside Boots a zebra crossing will mean the removal of the pelican crossing outside WH Smith. It's ludicrous.

"We feel a simple solution to the crossing problems in Market Place is to install a 'crossing, beware' sign because although pedestrians have known it's a crossing for 20 years motorists still don't.

"We're hoping North Yorkshire County Council executive member for highways Coun John Fort will visit the site and agree with us that the crossing outside Boots needs to be improved, but not at the risk of the crossing further down."

The speed table was implemented as part of a district council £1.4 million renaissance scheme, which was completed last August but has since prompted safety fears from local businesses, residents and councillors.
