SPORTS therapist and fitness instructor Filipe Lucio will join a team of fighting fit cyclists when he takes part in this year's Great Selby Bike Ride.
Portuguese-born Filipe, who works at the JJB Sports and Fitness Club on the Three Lakes retail park in town, will harness his pedal power for the second consecutive year. But he hasn't yet decided whether to tackle the 25-mile or 45-mile fund-raising route on May 11.

After moving to Selby in 1997 from his native Portugal, Mr Lucio started work as a sports therapist at the Abbey Leisure Centre in Scott Road. He said cycling has always been an important part of his keep-fit routine.

Mr Lucio added: "I've helped bike ride organiser David Jones on the sport therapy side in the past, but last year I decided to take an active part in the event.

"As part of a team of between five and ten people from JJB, we hope to raise a few hundred pounds between us to help support this year's charities.

"I give lessons at JJB in swimming and cycle spinning, and it would be nice for some of my class members to actually get out on the road on a bike rather than just doing everything in the gym.

"It was great when I took part last year, and I'm hoping to do the bike ride each year from now on."

The Selby Times-sponsored event is organised by Selby District Lions. Entry forms can be picked up from the Selby Times office, Selby Bike Centre and Halifax bank, all in Gowthorpe, as well as Halfords at the Three Lakes Retail Park in Bawtry Road and all other cycle shops in the area.

Money raised will be shared between the British Heart Foundation, Martin House Hospice, St Leonard's Hospice, Arthritis Research Campaign and Selby District Lions' local charities.

Bikers can enter the 25 or 45-mile circuits, both starting outside Barlby High School at 10am. Fee for the longer route is £3 for adults, £1.50 for under-16s, while the shorter route costs £2.50 for adults and £1.25 for juniors. Teams of six can enter for £12. Buy the Selby Times to keep undated on the big day.
