Volunteer plea

RECRUITMENT: Coun Mike Jordan recruiting volunteers for Sherburn Library.

AN urgent plea has gone out from a leading Sherburn councillor to recruit volunteers for the village’s struggling library service.

In the wake of library closures and restructuring across the region this year and redundancies of library staff, including the loss of head librarian at Sherburn John Cattanach in August, Coun Mike Jordan said the service had diminished.

But Coun Jordan (right) is determined to plug the gap with volunteers for a range of jobs at the Finkle Hill centre.

He said: “I am launching this recruitment drive with immediate effect. I still have to speak to North Yorkshire County Council heads of service in North Allerton, Chris Mellor and Jenny Brookes next month to present ideas on how this would work best.

“It’s important to keep the service going as the library is one of the focal points of the community.

“The NYCC library service has undergone some changes by reintroducing the way it delivers the service.

“For example, people delivering books to people’s homes now have to go out in pairs instead of as individuals, so we need more people for that service. Also the reduction in the number of full time staff means we need more volunteers.”

He said volunteer jobs on offer included sorting books, group reading to children and generally helping out with inquiries.

He further added: “This is very important to the community in many ways. We need to utilise what we have and try to maintain a good service.”

Anyone wishing to volunteer should call into the library in Finkle Hill.
