REVIEW: Disney on Ice show Passport To Advenure is a riot of colourful costumes, special effects and impressive skating moves – plenty to enthral children and keep the adults entertained.

Disney favourites Mickey and Minnie Mouse and their pals Donald and Daisy Duck took the audience on a journey through four popular tales – The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Lilo and Stitch and Peter Pan.

The skaters danced, spun and lifted their way through popular musical numbers including Under the Sea and the Circle of Life in an array of amazing costumes, some of which looked particularly difficult to negotiate around the ice.

I went with three children aged 14 months, three and four and they were all captivated by the performance. A spectacular, Disney on Ice concentrates more on the wow factor than storylines, so is probably best enjoyed by youngsters already familiar with the Disney films on which the show is based.

A particular highlight was the dance routine involving sea creatures from jellyfish and seahorses to starfish and mermaids. Although the real high point was Peter Pan, which saw the characters flying above the ice on harnesses, sprinkling fairy dust and even the appearance of a pirate ship and a giant crocodile. The moment the audience was asked to applaud to save Tinkerbell brought home what Disney is all about – the love of make believe and happy endings.

If you’re a cynic then Disney on Ice is not for you. It is schmaltzy, sparkly and super-sweet but if you’re looking for harmless family fun, some great figure skating and a few surprises then you won’t go wrong with this show.

Disney on Ice: Passport to Adventure is at the Motorpoint Arena until Sunday, November 25. For tickets, call the box office on 0114 2565656.
