YOUR FINAL COUNTDOWN

TODAY we announce the top trio in the Selby Times Citizen of the Year competition.

Our lucky seven contestants have been whittled down to three and now it's your chance to decide who walks away with the coveted district council accolade.

Sherburn fundraising maestro Alma Hodgson is a 69-year-old of Moor Lane who has dedicated more than three decades to serving her community.

The grandmother-of-three is gala committee chairwoman and ran Sherburn Brownie Pack for 32 years. Alma is currently busy raising cash for the village scout hut.

Martin Waterhouse is a 62-year-old grandad-of-two, nominated by Fuller Life Afternoon Group committee member Vera Baker. She said: "He's one of the unsung heroes of Selby."

Ex-mine worker Martin, of Bramley Avenue, Selby, also works with Selby District Vision, runs the Monday Club for adults with learning disabilities and has worked with MENCAP, the Citizens Advice Bureau and the MS Society.

Youth club worker Susan Sampson is a 42-year-old mum-of-two who helped set up Wistow Youth Club more than a decade ago and has been in charge ever since. Susan juggles the voluntary post with a foundation degree and jobs as a teaching assistant and school cook.

Married to Graham, 45, Susan lives in Jubilee Road, Wistow. She runs the youth club virtually single-handed, with help from three Selby High pupils.

"The youth club takes up a lot of my time but I really enjoy it," she said.

"I know most of the children from working at the school and it's great to provide something for them to do in the evenings. I couldn't do it without the help of the students though."

They now go forward to the top awards ceremony at the Carlton Towers civic dinner on March 31 with the winner receiving the Geoff Lynch Memorial Rose Bowl and Cotswolds steam-train break courtesy of our Out 'n' About travel club.

SDC chairman Coun Stephanie Duckett said: "These are all very special people. They've all gone that extra mile to make a difference to other people's lives."

Pick your winner by ticking the box on the vouchers in this week's Selby Times next to the name of the person you believe should be Citizen of the Year 2006. Send your entry to: Selby Times Citizen of the Year competition, 74-76 Gowthorpe, Selby, Y08 4ET by March 29. You can vote as many times as you like provided you use original forms. Photocopies not accepted.
