FOOD for thought is to be provided at Firth House Anchor Care Home in Selby next month when it cooks up a fundraiser in aid of two local charities.

Staff at the home are to stage a Devil’s Kitchen event on March 30, the proceeds from which are to be split between Selby Hands of Hope and the Thomas Cammack Appeal.

Based on the popular Gordon Ramsey TV show Hell’s Kitchen, two chefs will take to a red and a black kitchen at the home, off Millgate, where the residents’ lounge will be temporarily turned into a kitchen and dining room.

They will each cook up a menu featuring a choice of two four-course meals each, which paying guests will select from and then vote on.

Pearl Millin, Firth House business manager, said this was the fifth year the home had held the fundraiser for local charities which had, in the past, raised around £1,600.

She explained the two chefs would be Heidi Fidler, chef manager at the home, and Julie Benett, catering adviser for Anchor Yorkshire.

“The evening will have a red and black dress theme and tickets cost £20 for a four-course meal,” said Pearl.

“Diners will each be given a voting form and they will be asked to judge their chosen meal on categories including presentation and taste.

“Although a prize will be awarded to the winning chef, both Heidi and Julie have said they want it to be auctioned instead in aid of the two charities.”

The menu for the red kitchen is to be a choice of soup or garlic mushrooms as the starters; stuffed chicken breasts with black pudding or beef Wellington for the main course and sticky toffee pudding or fresh fruit salad for dessert.

Meanwhile, the black kitchen will be serving up an Oriental selection or melon balls with a raspberry and port jus for starters; poached salmon in a white wine and grape sauce, or steak and ale pie with a suet crust for the main course; and a choice of Black Forest gateau or apple pie with cream or custard for pudding.

Both menus will be rounded off with a cheese selection and coffee.

Tickets can be bought for the event – which will start at 7 for 7.30pm – from Firth House, on 01757 213546, or from SHOH by emailing wendy@selbyhandsofhope.org.uk or via the charity’s dedicated hotline on 07548 223066. Details of SHOH can be found at the www.selbyhandsofhope.org.uk website.

*As reported in last week’s edition, the York Property Shop estate agency has pledged to donate £25 for every property sold in the Selby area to SHOH. We would like to point out that the business can be contacted on 07521 50 54 54.
