OVER 1,000 people attended the second Selby Jobs Fair organised by Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams.

The fair, held at Selby College last Thursday, also saw more than 40 employers including Drax Power, Debenhams, Halfords, Argos and the Army turn up to tell people about work opportunities in the district.

Mr Adams said: “It was a very successful event. There were over 450 jobs on offer in the short term and 1,000 medium term employment opportunities.

“Talking to the employers I know that two vacancies were filled on the day and there were a number of interviews taking place the day after, which isn’t bad. The jobs fairs are all about putting people looking for work face to face with potential employers and I’ve had really good feedback from the employers but we’ll have the full picture in two or three months time.”

He added that creating employment was an issue very close to his heart.

“During the last election my main pledge was to increase employment in the district – it was my personal commitment to the people of Selby, and I think it’s one of the most important things I can do.

“I have personal experience of unemployment and I know it’s not a lot of fun. I want to do my best to create opportunities for other people.”

One person who knows the effectiveness of the jobs fairs is Damien Garvey, who attended this year representing his employers Backup Technology – however it was at last year’s fair that he landed his job!

“It’s quite a big change in 12 months – but I can’t complain!” the 23-year-old said. “I met Backup here last year when I was a graduate and looking for work, and it was two or three weeks later that they offered me a job.

“I think the fairs are great. This year has gone really well – we’ve spoken to some really promising people. We’re now going through their CVs and we’ll take it from there.”
