Widow’s 84-mile wall walk quest
A WIDOW from Selby should today be completing a trek along the length of Hadrian’s Wall in memory of her husband and his best friend.
Karen Walker and four of her close friends pulled on their walking boots to tackle the 84-mile challenge.
As well as doing it in memory of husband Wayne (pictured together right) and his pal Andy, who were tragically killed in a road crash in 2010, the quintet are also walking in memory of Karen’s cousin Gillian and friend Kathryn, who both died of cancer.
Karen’s group are raising money for road safety charity Brake and the Skin Cancer Research Fund.
They started the steep and hilly trek in Bowness-on-Solway last Saturday and planned to camp out each night on their way to the finish in Wallsend, Tyneside.
Karen said: “Wayne and Andy were killed in 2010 when they were struck by a car while out on the motorbikes.
“Trying to cope with such a tragic bereavement is very difficult, especially for my son who was only ten at the time, but police gave me some literature produced by Brake to help him to understand the feelings he was going through and give suggestions on how to cope with his loss.
“This helped both of us come to terms with what had happened.
“I am walking to help raise awareness of road safety and the need for people to understand the responsibility that all drivers have when they are taking control of a potentially lethal weapon.”
Some of the money raised by Karen through her trek will help to fund Brake’s work, which includes the provision of a range of support services for injured victims and families bereaved by road crashes, as well as to campaign to raise awareness about the importance of road safety.
Rich Andrew, of Brake, said: “Brake is extremely thankful to Karen and her friends for taking on this huge challenge and generously donating the funds she raises to Brake.”
Karen has already raised £1,015, surpassing her target of £1,000. To sponsor her go to her www.justgiving.com/Karen-Walker6 page.
