Waste removed from Goole Docks

THE final bales of waste stored at Goole Docks have now been removed, following work by Environment Agency staff with the company whose land they were dumped on, NW Trading (NWT).
Around 4,000 bales of household waste were illegally deposited last year on land managed by NWT at Goole Docks. Initially there were complaints from residents and businesses about odour and flies, but following intervention by the Environment Agency the bales were rewrapped and the complaints stopped.
The Environment Agency has been working with all involved to ensure that the bales were removed at no cost to the taxpayer.
Their efforts have paid off, with the final bales being removed to landfill before warmer weather sets in, bringing with it the possibility of more odours and flies.
Team Leader Ian Cowie said: “We’re very pleased that all the bales have finally been moved. We have been working hard behind the scenes and it’s been a longer process than we would have liked, but our efforts have meant that there has been no cost to the public purse.
“We appreciate that residents may have been concerned, and would like to apologise for the delay, but we have a duty not to incur more costs than necessary, and we believe this policy has now paid off.”
The Environment Agency is carrying out a complex criminal investigation into the dumping of the waste, and are unable to comment further on this.
Waste crime can cause pollution, puts human health at risk and undermines legitimate businesses. We take it very seriously and will take action.
