SELBY Globe Community Cinema is celebrating after receiving a festive cash windfall.
The group received a grant of £2,000 by North Yorkshire Police just before Christmas, as part of the ‘Why should they?’ campaign.
The project uses funds obtained unlawfully by criminals and splits the pot between numerous community-based groups.
Project manager for the Globe, Eva Lambert, says the cash will be used to mainly cover the group’s rent, but also that it can fund new initiatives.
She said: “We’re going to use it mainly for rent costs but also look at taking the cinema out to new places, and target teens in particular.
“We are looking at possibly taking the films into new areas and we want teenagers to be involved with this.
“We’re all volunteers who help out with the Globe so every donation helps and this grant is a huge boost.”
Eva says the cash injection will allow the group to target less privileged areas and families, whilst also letting local people have more choice in what they watch.
She said: “It’s about looking at areas that need help and where we can give kids the joy of seeing a film when they might not usually have been able to afford to see it.
“A lot of families and single parent families can’t often afford a trip to the cinema, especially when the neareast one is in York, so this scheme really is useful to so many people.
“There’s a lot of young children in the Selby area that don’t ever go to the cinema so it’s about making it a level playing field really.”
She added that a wider choice of films was also desirable, and now manageable with the funding: ““We want to know what people, especially children, want to watch.
“We need to find out what they want, and this funding makes all the difference with that aspect.”
The Globe’s first showing of the New Year is today, with children’s animation Madagascar 3 being shown at the Town Hall (10am).
