DISAPPOINTED youngsters are being kept away from a community fishing pond in Sherburn after vandals wrecked safety fencing for the third time in six months.

Caretaker of the bacon factory pond near the Sherburn Bypass, George Jordan, said he was “disgusted” that the platform fencing had been ripped down, as it was intended to protect children and cost up to £90 each time to replace.

He stormed: “I have been here, with other volunteers, for the past two years. Ever since we started we have intended to build this area up as a good community resource and this kind of mindless vandalism makes things unsafe for youngsters and takes money away from projects aimed at upgrading the pond area.”

He urged those pulling down the fencing to stop, as he said a few minutes of vandalism was causing days of heartache and spiralling costs for the many who enjoyed coming down for a quiet day’s fishing.

He added: “Both I and other volunteers are getting sick and tired of this happening. We don’t get paid for the work we do here and to see this happening time after time is heartbreaking and makes me really angry. I just can’t get my head around this. With the money spent on buying new fencing and hiring a joiner each time we could be buying trees and plants and making the pond area pleasant for visitors.

“My main concern at the moment is for youngsters. If the fencing isn’t there a child could quite easily fall into the pond. I can’t cope with this and I only hope these idiots have a conscience.”

Chairman of Sherburn Parish Council, Bob Packham, said the council had given money to fund improvements at the pond and he was concerned about what was happening.

He added: “As far as I am aware Mr Jordan has big plans for the area. This is very concerning and we will try to support him all we can.”
