Trip back in time for Sheffield shoppers to bag a bargain

CHRISTMAS shoppers took a step back in time at an annual market in Sheffield which is thought to have attracted record numbers.

Last year, 16,000 people flocked to the two-day event at Kelham Island Museum – but organisers said this year’s felt busier and they expect to beat that when the final numbers are counted

Tom Sharp, who dressed as Charles Dickens for the event to celebrate the 200th birthday of the Victorian novelist, said: “At times you couldn’t even see the cobbles on the ground because of the crowds.

“It was an absolutely wonderful weekend.

“Year on year the market and the programme of entertainment on offer is developing and this is certainly the biggest and best there has been.

“It was great to see people of all ages enjoying themselves.”

Some 150 stallholders dressed in traditional Victorian clothing to help create an olde-worlde atmosphere for shoppers buying their Christmas gifts.

Judy Forster, who visited with her husband Steve, of Swallownest, and grandchildren Izabelle and Lucas, said: “This was nice to visit because of all the history around Kelham Island and all the demonstrations to show things to children they perhaps have never seen before.”

Margaret Jackson, from Heeley, said: “The range of stalls are fantastic but there is always so much going on too.”

Organiser Niki Connolly, of Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust, said: “It is great to see so many people at Kelham Island bringing an old industrial quarter back to life.”
