Travellers’ site is set to move ahead
APPALED: Burn Parish Council chairman Chris Phillipson making a stand against another travellers' site in the village.
DESPITE angry objections from residents and members of Burn Parish Council, plans to extend the existing travellers’ site in the village look to be moving ahead.
There is a currently a seven-pitch site situated on Burn Airfield, which has been in place for some 25 years, but now Selby District Council wishes to see ten acres of land there developed into 15 pitches and two transit pitches.
Following an SDC executive meeting last week, parish council leader Chris Phillipson said: “It’s the most cynical and biased decision I recall from any council in many years. “They are riding roughshod over the parish council and residents who are unanimously opposed to the new site.” SDC leader, Councillor Mark Crane, confirmed that following the meeting a planning application is being put together for the site.
He explained: “The problem we have is that every parish council in the district would be opposed to a traveller site in their area. “We’re not riding roughshod over anybody but we have a responsibility that sufficient pitches are provided for the traveller community.”
