NEWS: News.

A WOMAN has died after plummeting from the top of a department store – and landing on a car.

The woman, in her early 40s, from Chapeltown, fell from the top storey of John Lewis in Barker’s Pool on Sunday at around 4.30pm.

She plunged towards the ground – but landed on the roof of a car with three people inside, which was parked up beside the shop.

Police and ambulances rushed to the scene following the tragedy, and the area where she fell was cordoned off during the evening.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said the death is not being treated as suspicious, and that the occupants of the car have been offered support to cope with their shock.

“Police received calls at 4.30pm on Sunday that a woman had fallen from the roof of John Lewis in Barker’s Pool, Sheffield,” she said.

“The woman in her early 40s from Chapeltown, Sheffield, received fatal injuries.

“Officers are not treating her death as suspicious.”

She added: “The woman hit a parked car. The car was not moving but it had multiple occupants.

“They have all been offered support by South Yorkshire Police.”

An inquest is set to be opened following a post-mortem examination of the body, expected to take place today or tomorrow.
