A MUCH-LOVED mum who gave her name to a popular cheese shop in Selby will be fondly remembered when a fund-raising beer is brewed in her memory.

Mollie Sharp, after whom the cheese shop in Finkle Street is named, died of cancer in September aged 70, and Brown Cow Brewery in Barlow are in the process of brewing dark beer Mollie Sharp’s Legacy to raise funds for St Gemma’s Hospice in Moortown, Leeds, which cared for her in the final two years of her life.

Her son Richard Sharp, who opened the Selby cheese shop two years ago using a legacy left by his partner Kate James’s mum Patsy, said the beer will be available in his shop from about October 19.

He added: “I feel this dark beer is a fitting tribute to my mum and will help to raise vital funds for St Gemma’s. My mum liked stouts and dark beers and I suppose that’s where I get my taste for similar brews from.”

Richard’s mum was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer four years ago and was given only weeks to live following a follow-up diagnosis in December.

But due to the care of staff and nurses at St Gemma’s Richard said her life was prolonged, which enabled her to celebrate his 40th birthday in April and her 70th birthday on September 18 with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, four days before she died in the hospice.

Richard further added: “I feel it is fitting that we brew the type of beer my mum liked and also raise vital funds for an organisation that provided great care for her. I approached Brown Cow Brewery owners Keith and Sue Simpson some time ago and they were more than happy to provide this special brew.

“The beer and pump clips and labels are still being made, but I hope the beer will be on sale in the shop from about October 19. I am also hoping that it will be served at the George and Dragon Beer Festival in West Haddlesey on October 20. I feel this is a fitting tribute to my mum and I hope we raise at least £500 from its sale.”
