A RECORD breaking year for students at Selby High School saw many achieving the GCSE grades they aimed for.

The school not only inspired a generation, but received the gold medal for this year’s GCSE results.

For the second year running records were broken and dreams realised as 68 per cent of students achieved the government’s gold standard of five or more A-C GCSEs including English and mathematics, together with 83 per cent of students achieving five or more GCSEs at C grade or above.

These are the best results in the school’s history and represent a 30 per cent improvement in the past five years and a 16 per cent increase, from 2011.

In addition, the figures are above the challenging FFTD measures set by the government for the first time in the school’s history!

Head teacher Paul Eckersley: “I am absolutely thrilled with this year’s record results.

“Thrilled for the school; thrilled for the students and their families who have, through their dedication, hard work, commitment and support, set a new gold standard for Selby.”

There were some fabulous individual performances. Selby High School’s top 12 students, in respect of the number of A*/A grades achieved, were Rachel Innis 13 A*C, 12 A*A and ten A*; Megan Knight 13 A*C, 12 A*A and nine A*; Gregor Anderson 13 A*C, 12 A*A and seven A*; Isobel Turner 13 A*C, 11 A*A, seven A*; Calvin Pang 14 A*C, 12 A*A and six A*; Elspeth Lewis 12 A*C, ten A*A, six A*; Nick Keepfer 13 A*C, nine A*A, four; Angus Hutton 12 A*C, nine A*A and four A*; Robert Thacker 13 A*C, six A*A, four A*; Zara Hanshaw 12 A*C, ten A*A, three A*; Alexandra Davies 11 A*C, nine A*A and three A*; Robert Clarkson 15 A*C, eight A*A and two A*.

A school spokeswoman said: “In addition, three year 11 students were celebrating achieving 100 per cent attendance during their five years at Selby High School, a truly rare and remarkable feat! Robert Clarkson, Hannah Huddlestone and Rhianne Sleight will each receive a special commendation at the governors’ annual awards at Selby Abbey.”
