Teen missed holiday date after night out

A REGRETFUL teenager who was due to go on a family holiday ended up in court instead after a night out with friends.

Instead of embarking on a break, Calum Morley, of Orchard Lane, Barkston Ash, spent most of the day in police custody.

The 18-year-old had been due to go away at 7.30am on August 25.

However, he went to a party with some friends the night before and ended up committing six motoring offences.

He appeared at Selby Magistrates Court last Thursday and pleaded guilty to drink-driving, taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, driving without a licence, using a vehicle without insurance, driving a vehicle that had no MOT, and also driving that vehicle while it had no road tax.

The car he had taken just before 5am on August 25 belonged to a friend of Morley’s who lived in Sherburn.

Keith Haggerty, defending, said Morley and his friends pooled cash to get a taxi home from the party they had been to, but that Sherburn was as far as they could afford to travel.

“He wandered around and went to a friend’s house and asked for a lift home,” said Mr Haggerty.

“An hour later, while his friend was at a different flat, he took the keys for the vehicle and drove off in it. Had he been sober and thinking clearly, he could have walked the distance home, which was about 35 to 40 minutes.

“Not only did he miss the departure date for the holiday, but he also spent most of the day in police custody.”

The court heard that the car’s owner had contacted the DVLA to declare the car off the road. Sandra White, prosecuting, said that it had been parked outside the owner’s address and had no MOT or road tax.

She said that police had spotted the car, without its lights on, swerving on Fenton Lane, Sherburn. After being stopped, Morley gave a breath-test reading of 59 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35. He was banned from driving for 16 months for the drink-driving. For the other offences, Morley got a 12-month community order and must do 150 hours’ unpaid work. He was also fined £250.
