CAMPAIGNING mother Catherine Lupton has held a meeting with Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams, aimed at highlighting neonatal care within the region.
Catherine tragically lost her son Joseph in August 2009. He arrived early and upon his birth he was placed in York Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit.
He then had to be transferred to a neo natal unit, with the nearest one being James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
Unfortunately by the time Catherine had arrived at the hospital, Joseph’s condition had tragically deteriorated.
Since then, she has fundraised and campaigned for Bliss, the UK charity working to provide the best possible care and support for all premature and sick babies and their families.
She is the North Yorkshire campaigner for the charity and says she is trying to spread the message.
She said: “I started campaigning last year and part of that involves getting people on board such as local MPs.
“I decided to contact Nigel Adams with the intention of getting the message out there, that these units do vital work.
“York Hospital is suffering in my opinion, and therefore that means the families with babies in or needing neonatal care are also suffering.”
She met with Mr Adams during his surgery at Portholme Road last Friday to talk about potential cuts that could affect units such as the one at York.
She said: “York Hospital’s situation needs to be highlighted because the staff there helped me immensely.
“Hopefully Mr Adams will get on board and help spread the message that these units need to be maintained.”
