Subways decline addressed

THE future of Goole subways were the topic for discussion last week.
MP Andrew Percy and town’s ward councillors Josie Head, Keith Moore, Mally Boatman and Pat O’Neil met with East Riding of Yorkshire Council for an update on proposed improvement works.
A total of £50,000 is to be spent improving the appearance of the subways, thanks to money from the Government’s Get Goole Moving scheme.
The works will involve the installation of a new anti-slip surface, wall cleaning, a new drainage system and the painting of the ceilings and roof beams.
Mr Percy said: “I was pleased that ERYC wanted to meet with us before any works commenced. This allowed us to consider what they were proposing and to give some additional feedback. The consensus was that we would also like to the see the walls not just cleaned, but also painted white. We also heard about the investigative works the ERYC has undertaken in relation to the drainage. They have found it hard to track down the original drainage plans and I’ve been trying to assist on this matter with Network Rail. £50,000 sounds like a lot of money but it won’t be enough to address all of the problems in the subway but it should help to reverse the decline.”
