Students get a taste of high school
STUDENTS starting their term at Sherburn High School this week got a taste of life at a secondary school during the holidays, thanks to a summer school organised by North Yorkshire County Council.
Activities during the two week course included trips to Rotherham’s Magna museum and Leeds United’s Elland Road ground as well as skills sessions with the fire service.
Keith Aspden, NYCC’s family of schools co-ordinator, said: “This is a new Department for Education initiative for students who are going to be moving into year seven. We do all sorts of things including booster classes in music, English and cookery and the trips out as well as a bit of maths.
“It does give the youngsters a bit more confidence when they get to their new school and they also get to meet the staff, some of the older students and some of the people who will be their peers when they get to Sherburn. They also get to know the layout of the school, which helps a great deal.
“This year has been a success and we have funding in place for the next three years.”
