Stolen digger recovered
A PUBLIC-SPIRITED youth sparked a swift response from police to ensure that a digger stolen from Eggborough was quickly recovered.
The teenager knocked on the door of Eggborough Police Station at around 10pm last Wednesday to report that he had seen some suspicious activity on the site of the old nursing home on Weeland Road.
He reported seeing a mini digger being loaded onto a trailer which was then driven away on the back of an old Land Rover Discovery.
Details of the suspect vehicle were circulated to officers on patrol and to neighbouring forces and it was spotted by South Yorkshire Police in Askern, Doncaster.
Following a short pursuit the Land Rover was stopped and the digger was recovered at around 10.50pm.
The driver of the vehicle, a man from the South Yorkshire area, ran from the scene but was quickly caught up with and was arrested on suspicion of theft.
He has been released on police bail as enquiries continue.
PC Tony Morton, of Eggborough Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “This was a fantastic response all round which ensured that the digger was recovered within an hour of it being stolen.
“Everyone from the lad who reported the incident, to the force control room, to our roads policing officers and our colleagues at South Yorkshire Police, played their part in what was a brilliantly co-ordinated response.”
