CANCER Research UK charity shop in Gowthorpe joined hundreds of others across the country on Friday when thousands of pounds were raised through the Stand Up For Cancer event.

It was the first time the US initiative has been held in the UK and assistant manager of Cancer Research UK Sam Oxley said it had been a huge success.

Millions of viewers watched a special Channel 4 fund-raiser on Friday for the initiative in which dozens of celebrities joined in.

Sam said: “Thanks to everyone who helped to raise cash on Friday. We continue to raise money for the charity. For example people can contribute to us through gift aid by simply filling in a form in the shop in Gowthorpe and an extra percentage of everything sold that they contribute to us will go towards research projects.

“We continue to welcome donations and also volunteers to help us. If anyone wants to join our team they call into the shop.”
