Soldier receives special recognition
HONOUR: Damien O'Neill, from Selby has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to his Battalion by one of the oldest Merchant Guilds in the country, the York Company of Merchant Adventurers.
A soldier from Selby has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to his Battalion.
Damien O’Neill received the special recognition from one of the oldest Merchant Guilds in the country; the York Company of Merchant Adventurers.
Receiving a specially engraved Tankard, Corporal O’Neill, who serves with the 1st Battalion, the Yorkshire Regiment, was honoured among eight others from across the region by the Merchant Adventurers at a ceremony which took place at The Merchant Adventurers’ Hall in York, last month.
Originally inaugurated in the 1980’s to honour the sailors of HMS York, the Tankard Awards were expanded 14 years ago to honour all three services and cadet forces.
Corporal O’Neill has provided valuable motivation to his platoon performing outstandingly in his role as Physical Training Instructor, while at the same time competing for the Army in Judo – demonstrating notable drive and determination along with exceptional fitness and a will to succeed.
He has also received much recognition for his active part in organising extra-curricular activities for his platoon which also contributes greatly to the maintenance of morale within 1st Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment.
David Rayner CBE, the Governor of the Company of Merchant Adventurers said: “The Merchant Adventurers are proud of their links with regular, reserve and cadet units of the armed forces.
“It is particularly important at times like these with regulars and reserves deployed on operations around the world that organisations like ours demonstrate our support for these men and women and we are grateful for the opportunity.
“Although the Company of Merchant Adventurers dates back to 1357 it is a forward-looking organisation which strongly believes that supporting reservists and youngsters in the region is one way the Company can contribute to the future.”
Guests and recipients were also given a free tour of the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall the construction of which began in 1357 in order that the Guild could conduct their business affairs, meet together socially, look after the poor and pray to God.
