'Shoddy' house builders blasted by Selby residents

RESIDENTS of a new Barratt estate claim the house-builder has gone against planning approval for their homes to save cash.

Paula Walter and John Davies (above), backed by other residents of The Haven, claim Barratt Homes promoted 37 top-of-the-range Selsdon properties for sale after being granted planning permission for the house type but actually built bottom-of-the-range Sutton homes.

The builder has now submitted a retrospective application to Selby District Council planning chiefs to change the house types of more than half the 72-home development, as well as associated boundary fencing at Street Record.

John, who lives in one of the affected properties, said: "The development looks bland and the homes look nothing like those in the plans or at other Barratt developments. I'm disappointed.

"Construction cost more than thought, and Barratt has obviously tried to save money by building homes to a lower specification, which is unfair on the homeowners who paid a lot of money."

Residents say the original plans show a different style of integral garage, different brick work and rendering that's missing on the finished homes.

Neighbour Paula added: "It's shoddy. Barratt say there's no difference but they must need their eyes testing. They've done it to save money – end of story – and it shouldn't be allowed.

"We don't want the homes pulled down, just finished properly. Barratt built up a wonderful picture of a beautiful development set against the Selby renaissance and that's what we want."

Conservative election choice Nigel Adams said: "I'd like to think Barratt would address the concerns of residents, some of whom feel they've been mis-sold their properties and aren't being listened to."
