Shipyard memories
BOOK: Rowland Ward, Brian Thorne and Rowland Chilvers with volume two of the Cochrane story. (BUY THIS PHOTO L7676TS) Picture: Tony Saxton
LIFE at Cochrane and Sons shipyard in Selby is revealed in the second volume of the famous ship builder’s pictorial history by Roland Chilvers.
On Saturday the public has the chance to buy a signed copy from the local historian from Hemingbrough, as he makes a personal appearance at Selby Library in Micklegate from 9.30am to noon.
Also in attendance will be trustees of Selby Museum Group, Rowland Ward and Brian Thorne, who will answer any questions along with Mr Chilvers.
The book’s author said the second historical volume followed on where the first left off and revealed even more fascinating facts about the industry that was so much a part of the town.
He added: “For anyone with family connections to Cochrane and Sons this should be a fascinating book. There are lots of pictures of groups of men who worked at the shipyard over the years. There are more than 200 pictures in the book.”
He further added: “The book also contains what I believe to be one of the earliest photographs taken down there in 1898.” To get a copy at £11.50, visit the library or Selby Times in Gowthorpe.
