A LITTLE boy can continue to receive vital therapy thanks to a generous donation from Selby Times-backed Selby Hands of Hope.
Noah Banks, five, from Eggborough, has spastic diplegic cerebral palsy, which his mother says leaves him unable to sit, stand or walk unaided.
She said until Noah started primary school he received conductive education in Sheffield two days a week at Paces school – a special needs establishment for children with Noah’s condition. Now thanks to a £1,000 donation from SHOH Noah can spend a two-week summer camp at Paces later this month.
Mrs Banks said: “Conductive education at Paces is a holistic learning approach designed to help disabled children become more independent. It was developed in Hungary, but British therapists and teachers have used elements of the system for over 20 years.
“Conductive Education is not suitable for everyone and it isn’t a cure. It may, however, enable children to develop more independence. Conductors work with youngsters to develop their movement skills, speech and communication skills, cognitive functions, intellectual skills, self-care and social skills.
“As we have previously seen the benefits of this education we have decided to send him again so he can learn new skills and gain more independence.”
Noah’s mum described her son as an extremely bright child who loves life, but said his motor development was severely affected, which meant he was unable to walk, sit or stand without help.
She added: “To achieve what we all take for granted, Noah has ongoing therapy. His improvement has been remarkable and he continues to amaze everyone around him. Sadly, this treatment is expensive and Noah’s family therefore need to raise the funds to cover these costs.
“Noah is surrounded by love, but having specialised help and treatment will make life a little easier for both him and his family and give him the independence he needs.”
Selby Hands of Hope chairwoman Wendy Singh said she was more than willing to help Noah as she was blown away by his and his family’s optimism.
She added: “This therapy is vital for Noah and we at SHOH hope our donation will be of great benefit to him.”
